When you type "Hikkaduwa" into Google Maps, you see one long stretch of coastline. But if you talk to the locals or frequent travelers, they will tell you a secret: Hikkaduwa is actually a tale of two very different beaches.
On the north end, you have the famous Hikkaduwa Beach (often called the main beach or Coral Sanctuary). Just a few minutes south lies the expansive, golden stretch known as Narigama Beach.
While they are walking distance from each other, the vibe, the ocean, and the crowd are completely different. Choosing the wrong one for your hotel location could mean the difference between a quiet snorkeling holiday and a surf-party adventure.
So, which one is right for you? We are breaking down the battle of the beaches to help you decide.
Hikkaduwa Beach: The Family-Friendly Aquarium
If you are imagining calm, glass-like water where you can see the fish swimming around your ankles, this is the place. Hikkaduwa Beach is the historic center of tourism in the town. It is located towards the northern end of the strip, roughly starting from the Hikka Tranz hotel and extending up to the Coral Sanctuary.
The Ocean and Activities The water here is protected by a natural reef barrier, which breaks the waves far out at sea. This creates a natural swimming pool effect near the shore. It is the safest place to swim in Hikkaduwa, making it incredibly popular for families with children or travelers who aren't strong swimmers.
The main attraction here is the marine life. This is where the famous "Turtle Beach" is located. You can stand in knee-deep water and giant Green Sea Turtles will glide right past you. It is also the entry point for the Hikkaduwa National Park (Coral Sanctuary). You don’t need a boat to see the reef; you can rent a snorkel mask from a beach vendor, wade in, and immediately be surrounded by colorful Parrotfish and Angelfish.
The Vibe and Crowd Because of the safe swimming and the turtles, this beach is often busier during the day. It attracts day-trippers coming from Galle or Colombo. The beach strip here is quite narrow in some places, the water comes right up to the hotel walls during high tide so it is less about sunbathing and more about water activities.

Narigama Beach: The Surfer’s Golden Paradise
Head just a kilometer south, and the landscape changes dramatically. Narigama Beach is the "cool younger cousin" of the main strip. It runs from the main surf point down towards Thiranagama.
The Ocean and Activities Here, the reef disappears, and the Indian Ocean crashes directly onto the sand. The waves are bigger, the current is stronger, and the energy is higher. This is the surfing heart of Hikkaduwa.
During the peak season (November to April), Narigama is lined with surf schools. The sandy bottom makes it an excellent place for beginners to learn to surf without worrying about cutting their feet on sharp coral. However, for casual swimming, you need to be more careful here due to the currents and waves. It’s more about jumping in the waves than lazy floating.
The Vibe and Crowd Narigama is famous for its massive stretch of golden sand. Unlike the narrow main beach, Narigama is wide and spacious. You can walk for kilometers without running out of beach.
This is the sunset capital of the south. In the late afternoon, the beach fills with travelers playing beach volleyball, jogging, or just lounging on sunbeds. It feels laid-back, bohemian, and spacious. If you are looking for that "endless summer" feeling where you can read a book on a sunbed without noise, Narigama is your spot.

Dining and Nightlife: Where is the Party?
The difference in beaches also dictates the food and party scene.
Hikkaduwa Beach (North) The dining here is more established and slightly more formal. You have large hotels with buffet spreads and seafood restaurants that have been around for decades. It is great for a sit-down dinner with a view of the harbor or the turtles. It tends to get quiet relatively early, making it ideal for those who want a peaceful night's sleep.
Narigama Beach (South) Narigama is where the nightlife lives. The beach is lined with wooden beach shacks, reggae bars, and trendy cafes. Places like Mambo’s, Top Secret, and Funky de Bar are institutions here.
During the day, these shacks serve cold coconuts and avocado toast. At night, they light bonfires, turn up the music, and host beach parties that can go until dawn. If you want to sip a cocktail with your toes in the sand while listening to a DJ, Narigama is where you need to be.
The Verdict: Which One Should You Choose?
Still undecided? Here is the cheat sheet to help you pick your base.
Choose Hikkaduwa Beach (North) if:
- You are traveling with young children who want to swim safely.
- Your main priority is snorkeling and seeing sea turtles.
- You prefer a traditional hotel experience over beach shacks.
- You want to wake up and jump straight into calm water.
Choose Narigama Beach (South) if:
- You want to learn to surf or catch some waves.
- You love long beach walks and watching the sunset.
- You are looking for beach parties, happy hours, and a younger crowd.
- You want wide, open space to sunbathe without crowds.
The Best of Both Worlds The beauty of Hikkaduwa is that you don't really have to choose. A tuk-tuk ride between these two beaches costs very little and takes about 5 minutes. Or, if you enjoy walking, you can stroll from one to the other along the road (or the beach during low tide).
Our recommendation? Stay in Narigama for the chilled-out vibes and the sunsets, but take a morning day trip up to Hikkaduwa Beach to say hello to the turtles. That way, you get the best of both worlds.
