After a few days of sun, sand, and salt in Hikkaduwa, you might be craving a change of scenery. Just a short 20-minute drive north lies a completely different world. Gone are the crashing waves and golden sands, replaced by calm, glassy waters and dense green forests.
This is the Madu Ganga (Madu River), a complex coastal wetland ecosystem that opens up into a massive lake dotted with islands. It is one of the most popular day trips from Hikkaduwa, and for good reason.
A boat safari here isn't just a ride; it is a journey through nature, culture, and history. If you are looking to trade the surfboard for a river boat, here is everything you need to know about the Madu River Safari.
Cruising the Green Tunnels
The highlight of the safari is undoubtedly the mangrove tunnels. The Madu Ganga is famous for its thick mangrove forests that grow right out of the water.
As your boat approaches these dense patches, the engine slows down. You glide silently into a natural tunnel formed by the twisting roots and canopy of the trees. The temperature drops, the light turns a soft green, and the noise of the outside world disappears. It feels like entering a secret jungle passage.
This is a biodiversity hotspot. Keep your camera ready because the wildlife here is abundant. You are almost guaranteed to see massive Water Monitor lizards (which look like small crocodiles) sunbathing on the banks or swimming next to your boat. Above you, look for Kingfishers, Egrets, and even troops of Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys jumping between the trees.

Stop 1: The Cinnamon Island
This isn't just a nature tour; it is a cultural lesson. One of the most interesting stops is "Cinnamon Island." As the name suggests, this small island is dedicated to growing and processing true Ceylon Cinnamon.
You will hop off the boat and visit a local family’s hut. Here, they will give you a live demonstration of how cinnamon is harvested. It is an art form. You watch them strip the bark from the branch, scrape it, and roll it into the quills you recognize from the supermarket.
The smell inside the hut is intoxicating. You can buy fresh cinnamon sticks, cinnamon oil (great for headaches!), and cinnamon powder directly from the source. It is the freshest spice you will ever buy.
Stop 2: The Fish Therapy Spa
Prepare to be tickled. Floating in the middle of the river are several rectanglar cages that serve as "Fish Spas."
This is a unique, natural pedicure. You sit on a wooden deck and lower your feet into the enclosed water. Hundreds of "Doctor Fish" (a type of toothless carp) instantly swarm your feet and begin nibbling away the dead skin.
The sensation is strange somewhere between a vibration and a tickle. It often leads to uncontrollable giggles from everyone on the boat. After about 10 or 15 minutes, you pull your feet out, and they feel surprisingly smooth. It is a fun, quirky experience that kids and adults both enjoy.

Stop 3: Kothduwa Temple
In the middle of this vast estuary lies an island with a deep spiritual history. The Kothduwa Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple that dates back hundreds of years.
Your boat will dock at the temple pier. It is a serene place, completely surrounded by water. The history says that the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was once hidden here for protection during times of political unrest. Walking around the white stupa with the panoramic view of the lake is a peaceful contrast to the excitement of the fish spa.
How to Plan Your Trip
Getting There The starting point for the safaris is usually in the town of Balapitiya, which is about 15-20 kilometers north of Hikkaduwa. You can easily hire a tuk-tuk or a taxi to take you there. The driver will often wait for you while you do the tour.
Best Time to Go Early morning (around 8:00 AM) or late afternoon (around 4:00 PM) is best. The midday sun can be very hot on the open lake, and the wildlife is more active during the cooler hours.
Duration and Cost The entire boat ride usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The boats are private, meaning you rent the whole boat for your group, not per person. The price is negotiable, so don't be afraid to bargain a little before you hop in!

A Perfect Half-Day Escape The Madu River Safari is the perfect way to break up your beach holiday. It combines a little bit of adventure, a little bit of education, and a lot of natural beauty. By lunch time, you can be back in Hikkaduwa, ready for another sunset on the sand.
