Planning a trip to the south coast of Sri Lanka? Hikkaduwa is the perfect blend of laid-back island life and vibrant energy. While many travelers rush through on their way to Galle or Mirissa, "Hikka" deserves a dedicated spot on your calendar.

Three days is the ideal amount of time to soak it all in. You have enough time to explore the underwater world, catch some waves, eat incredible food, and still have plenty of downtime to do absolutely nothing.

We have mapped out the perfect 72-hour guide to help you experience the best of Hikkaduwa without rushing.

Day 1: Arrival, Beach Vibes, and Sunset Chasing

Morning: Check-In and Chill

Arrive in Hikkaduwa and drop your bags. Whether you are staying at a luxury beachfront hotel like Hikka Tranz or a cozy boutique guesthouse, the first rule of Hikkaduwa is to slow down.

Head straight to the ocean to wash off the travel fatigue. If you are near the main town, the water is calm and inviting. Grab a fresh fruit juice from a beachside stall pineapple and passion fruit is a local favorite and let the humidity sink in.

Afternoon: Narigama Beach Hangout

Once the sun starts to get higher, move south towards Narigama Beach. This is the wider, sandier stretch of coastline that feels less crowded than the main coral strip.

This is the perfect spot for sunbathing. Rent a sunbed from one of the beach bars (usually free if you buy lunch or drinks) and settle in. The vibe here is pure relaxation. If you are feeling active, this is also the best spot for beginner surfers. You will see surf schools lining the shore; why not book a lesson for tomorrow?

Evening: The Golden Hour Sunset

You cannot miss the sunset on your first day. Hikkaduwa is famous for its "golden hour." As evening approaches, find a beanbag at a beachfront bar like Top Secret or Funky de Bar.

Order a classic Arrack Sour or a cold Lion Lager and watch the sky turn into a painting of purples and oranges. It is a ritual here. As the stars come out, stay on the beach for a candlelit seafood dinner. The fresh calamari and jumbo prawns grilled right on the sand are the perfect welcome feast.

Day 2: Underwater Adventures and Local Culture

Morning: Snorkeling at the Coral Sanctuary

Wake up early! The ocean is calmest in the morning, making it the best time for snorkeling. Head to the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary. You don’t need a boat; you can simply rent a mask and fins from the beach and swim out.

The reef here is shallow and teeming with life. Look for colorful Parrotfish, Moorish Idols, and immense schools of tiny tropical fish. It is an underwater garden just meters from the shore.

Meet the Sea Turtles

After your snorkel, walk north along the beach towards the rocky outcrop near the Hikka Tranz hotel. This is "Turtle Beach."

Here, massive Green Sea Turtles swim right up to the shore in knee-deep water. Seeing these ancient creatures in the wild is a bucket-list experience. Remember to keep a respectful distance and never touch them observing them gliding through the water is magical enough.

Afternoon: A Touch of History

After a morning in the water, dry off and take a tuk-tuk ride to explore the local culture. Visit the Tsunami Honganji Vihara, home to the towering replica of the Bamiyan Buddha. It is a serene and powerful memorial that watches over the coast.

Just down the road, you can visit the Tsunami Photo Museum. It is a small, humble place, but the stories and images inside are deeply moving. It provides important context to the region you are visiting and honors the resilience of the local community.

Late Afternoon: Cafe Hopping

Hikkaduwa has a booming cafe culture. For a late lunch or afternoon coffee, head to spots like Salty Swamis or Steffi’s Mandala. These places offer a modern twist on island food think smoothie bowls, avocado toast, and excellent barista coffee. It is also a great place to meet other travelers and digital nomads.

Day 3: Wellness, Souvenirs, and Departure

Morning: Yoga or Massage

Start your final day with some self-care. Hikkaduwa is a hub for wellness. Join a drop-in yoga class at one of the many shalas to stretch out your surf-sore muscles.

Alternatively, treat yourself to an Ayurvedic massage. Sri Lanka is famous for its traditional oil treatments. A 60-minute full-body massage using herbal oils is the ultimate way to relax before you have to travel again.

Mid-Day: Souvenir Shopping on Galle Road

Before you pack your bags, take a stroll down the main Galle Road. This strip is lined with colorful shops selling everything you need to remember your trip.

Look for bright batik clothing, hand-carved wooden masks, and coconut shell jewelry. If you love the local tea, you can find shops selling premium Ceylon tea packs that make great gifts for family back home.

Afternoon: One Last Coconut

Before you hop in your taxi or catch the train, head back to the beach for one last King Coconut (Thambili).

Sit by the water, dig your toes into the sand one last time, and take a mental picture of the waves. Hikkaduwa has a way of drawing people back, so this likely won’t be "goodbye," but rather "see you later."

Planning Your Trip?

  • Best time to visit: November to April (Dry season and calm seas).
  • Getting there: Hikkaduwa is about a 2-hour drive from Colombo via the Southern Expressway.
